The journey south from Darwin is one of those trips where the distances look manageable on a map, but you’ll quickly find plenty of reasons to stop along the way.
From waterfront sunsets and national parks to gorges, waterfalls and natural hot springs, this stretch of the Northern Territory packs a lot into a relatively short section of road. If you’re travelling through the Top End, these are some of the places worth making time for.
Darwin
Darwin feels different from every other Australian capital city.
Partly because of the tropical climate, partly because of its connection to the outdoors, and partly because life here seems to move at its own pace.
The waterfront is a natural place to begin, whether you’re cooling off near the lagoon, grabbing lunch overlooking the harbour or simply enjoying the warm weather. Stokes Hill Wharf remains a favourite for seafood, while Crocosaurus Cove offers one of the more unusual wildlife experiences you’ll come across anywhere in Australia.
As the day winds down, most roads seem to lead towards Mindil Beach. The sunsets are famous for good reason, and during the dry season the markets provide another reason to linger a little longer.
If you’ve got extra time before heading south, both Litchfield and Kakadu National Parks make excellent day trips and offer a glimpse of the landscapes waiting further inland.
Katherine
Three hours down the Stuart Highway, the scenery starts to change and Katherine becomes the gateway to some of the Northern Territory’s most impressive natural attractions.
Most visitors arrive with Nitmiluk National Park already on their list. That’s understandable. Nitmiluk Gorge is one of the region’s standout destinations, whether you choose to explore it on foot, by boat or from the air.
Just outside town, Leliyn (Edith Falls) is another stop that’s difficult to miss. The walking trails and swimming spots make it a favourite for travellers looking to cool off after a day on the road.
Katherine also rewards people who stay curious. Cutta Cutta Caves offers a completely different experience beneath the surface, while the Katherine Hot Springs provide an easy way to unwind after a few busy days exploring the region.
It’s the sort of place that often turns a short stop into an extra night or two.
Mataranka
An hour south of Katherine, the landscape shifts again.
Mataranka is best known for its natural hot springs, and most travellers are more than happy to plan their visit around them.
The warm, clear waters of Bitter Springs remain a favourite for many visitors. Floating gently through the spring fed water surrounded by palms and paperbarks feels a long way removed from everyday life.
Nearby Mataranka Thermal Pool offers another option, with naturally heated water providing a welcome place to relax after a day spent exploring.
Beyond the springs themselves, Mataranka also serves as a gateway to Elsey National Park and the wider Never Never region, an area that holds an important place in Australian history and storytelling.
Why This Part of the Territory Is Worth Exploring
It’s easy to think of Darwin, Katherine and Mataranka as stops on the way to somewhere else.
The reality is that each offers something completely different.
One day you’re watching the sun set over Darwin Harbour. The next you’re standing above Nitmiluk Gorge or floating through the crystal clear waters of Bitter Springs.
That’s what makes travelling through the Northern Territory so rewarding.
The destinations are memorable, but the changing landscapes between them are every bit as much a part of the experience.
