Start in the city itself, where elegant cathedrals and tree-lined streets have earned Armidale its nickname as the “city of cathedrals.” Wander through leafy parks, browse the galleries at the New England Regional Art Museum, or step back in time at Saumarez Homestead, a grand Edwardian mansion surrounded by heritage rose gardens just a short drive from town. Keen to learn more about the region’s First Nations history and culture? The Armidale & Region Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place is a welcoming place to start, with tours, workshops and exhibitions celebrating the Anaiwan, Kamilaroi and neighbouring nations.

Nature lovers are properly spoilt too. Oxley Wild Rivers National Park sits right on Armidale’s doorstep, with World Heritage-listed rainforest, dramatic gorges and some of the region’s best waterfalls, including the spectacular Dangars Falls. Pack a picnic, lace up your walking shoes, or simply take in the view from one of the many lookouts scattered through the gorge country.

When it’s time to unwind, Armidale’s craft beer and coffee scene punches well above its weight — settle in at a local bar for a cold one and some live music, or refuel with a proper flat white before you hit the road again.
